Gausman allows no earned runs but loses in Norfolk start

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Kevin Gausman throws to the Texas Rangers during a baseball game, Thursday, July 2, 2015, in Baltimore.

Kevin Gausman pitched reasonably well Sunday despite some control problems in a start for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides. He took the loss, however, in what is expected to be the first of two starts for the Tides before returning to the Baltimore Orioles.

Gausman pitched five innings against Norfolk on Sunday, allowing one run (unearned) on three hits while walking four and striking out three. The Tides fell to the Knights 2-0, saddling Gausman with a loss despite allowing no earned runs.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter let slip before Sunday's Orioles-Nationals game that the Orioles will need to make a move to add a fifth starter later this month, indicating that Kevin Gausman will be the selection when the Orioles next need a fifth starter July 22 against the New York Yankees.

Gausman is 1-1 with a 5.00 ERA in 11 games (three starts) for the Orioles this season. He is expected to start again on Friday for Norfolk.
