Everth Cabrera making first spring start in center field against Phillies

CLEARWATER, FLA. — Orioles manager Buck Showalter said earlier this spring that Everth Cabrera would likely see time in the outfield, and Cabrera will start in center field for the first time Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies at Bright House Field.

When Cabrera, normally an infielder, was asked about playing center before the game, it was news to him, but he said it wouldn't be an issue.

"I've been playing a little bit of center field before," said Cabrera, who will also lead off Monday. "It doesn't matter to me. I need the opportunity to play somewhere and I can help my team to win games.

He said he hasn't taken any fly balls in the outfield this spring.

"Right now, nothing," Cabrera said. "They don't tell me nothing, but I think it will be alright."

Cabrera has never played center field at the major league level. The only time he's played the position as a pro was 2012, when he played five games in center for Triple-A Tucson.

"I can play all over," said Cabrera, who has made starts at second base and shortstop this spring. "No first base, no catcher, no pitcher, but other than that, I can help my team in a lot of situations like that."

Right-hander Miguel Gonzalez will make his third start of the spring. He's slated to go four innings. Right-hander Dylan Bundy and right-hander Brad Brach are also scheduled to pitch.

Right-hander Bud Norris is expected to start Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins back home in Sarasota. Right-hander Phil Hughes is scheduled to start for the Twins.

Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez will make his fourth Grepefruit League start Wednesday against the Twins in Fort Myers. Right-hander Ervin Santana will start for Minnesota.

Right-hander Chris Tillman will start Thursday at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates and former Orioles pitcher Radhames Liz.
