Notes: Everth Cabrera allowed to travel to Toronto; J.J. Hardy progressing from injury

Cabrera, who also served a 50-game suspension for his role in the Biogenesis performance-enhancing-drug scandal and missed 69 games last season with hamstring injuries, has played well over the season's first nine games. He is batting .269/.310/.269, and has hit safely in six of his seven games played.

-- Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy still does not have a start date for his minor league rehabilitation assignment, but he continued to make progress from his left shoulder injury Friday.

With the Orioles out of town, Hardy worked out at Double-A Bowie on Friday, taking batting practice and fielding ground balls hit to him by minor league infield coordinator Kevin Bradshaw.

"Everything went well there as normal," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "A little more intense hitting for about 20 minutes, felt good. Thought it was a good idea to take a day yesterday. Felt better today than he did the day before yesterday; see how he feels tomorrow."

Showalter said Hardy will do the same routine Saturday, but the Orioles are waiting until the discomfort in Hardy's shoulder completely subsides.

"To me, it's kind of on hold until he gets that last little discomfort out of his swing out of there," Showalter said. "Everything else is fine."

Showalter has said that he wants to avoid having Hardy start a rehab assignment too quickly and risk a setback, so the team is bringing him along slowly. But once he begins his rehab assignment, Hardy isn't expected to need many games before he's activated off the disabled list.

"I'm hoping some time next week, he starts a rehab assignment. I hope," Showalter said. "I don't think it will be over the weekend."

-- Infielder Jimmy Paredes (lower-back strain) is batting second and starting at third base tonight for Bowie as he begins his minor league rehab assignment.

Paredes will play for the Baysox tonight, then report to Triple-A Norfolk for the rest of his rehab assignment.

He was close to making his first Opening Day roster before injuring his back in the final week of spring training.

Barring an injury that would create a roster spot, Paredes is expected to use up most, if not all, of the 20-day rehab assignment window, especially since he can't be activated and optioned to the minors without clearing waivers.

-- Catcher Matt Wieters recorded six at-bats and caught one inning, with no strenuous throws, in a simulated game in Sarasota, Fla., on Friday. He also threw from 150 feet, Showalter said.

"He's progressing well," Showalter said. "Still ahead of what is normal Tommy John surgery schedule rehab."
