SARASOTA, Fla. – Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy hasn't worn No. 49 long enough to be attached to the jersey number, so when the team added right-hander Yovani Gallardo – who has worn No. 49 his entire major league career – he easily gave it up.
"Obviously, if you've got time with it, it probably means a lot to you, but I don't have much time [with] 49, so it's not that special to me right now," Bundy said. "I just need to get to the big leagues and get a number I'm proud of."
Bundy has changed numbers to No. 37, which was pitching coach Dave Wallace's number. Wallace will own No. 16, even though his jersey is rarely seen because he wears a jacket during games. Kevin Gausman wore No. 37 before Wallace's arrival. He now wears No. 39.
When new players come in and request a number another player has, they usually compensate him for the number.
"I don't know yet," Bundy said about getting something for No. 49. "We haven't decided that. I'm guessing it will come later in camp, but me and Yovani have talked a little bit and we'll figure something out."
"Don't really need to say it yet," Bundy said with a smile.
Gallardo's first bullpen session: Newly signed starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo has taken part in the last two days of drills, but he will pitch his first bullpen session on Saturday morning. He will not take part in either of the two intrasquad games.
Gallardo said during his introductory news conference that he had kept up his offseason throwing program while he was waiting to finalize his deal with the Orioles, but wanted a couple of days to get comfortable in camp before his first mound session.
Intrasquad pitching set: The Orioles will see their first competitive action this weekend by playing intrasquad games on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's game — which will take place on the Camden Yards South back field of the Ed Smith Stadium complex and begin at 12:30 p.m. — will be five innings long. The game will be open to the public.
Zach Britton, Brian Matusz, Parker Bridwell, Mychal Givens and Andy Oliver will pitch for one team and Ubaldo Jimenez, Odrisamer Despaigne, Chaz Roe, Dale Thayer and Andrew Triggs will pitch for the other team.
Sunday's seven-inning game will begin at 1 p.m. on the Ed Smith Stadium main field. It will be closed to the public.
That game will include Chris Tillman, Kevin Gausman, Jason Garcia, Brad Brach, Todd Redmond and Cesar Cabral for one team and Miguel Gonzalez, T.J. McFarland, Dylan Bundy, Vance Worley, Hunter Harvey and Ashur Tolliver on the other team. Pitchers will be held to about 15 pitches.
