Dariel Alvarez to start International League All-Star Game; Clevenger, Drake, Bowden also named

Outfielder Dariel Alvarez leads a contingent of four Norfolk Tides who will represent the International League in the July 15 Triple-A All-Star Game on July 15 in Omaha, Neb.

Alvarez, 26, was the Tides' lone starter elected to the game, an honor earned on the heels of a hot June. He entered the month batting .239, but hit .340 with six home runs, nine doubles, and 16 RBIs in June. He leads the Tides with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs this season.

When explaining the decision to designate outfielder Delmon Young for assignment Wednesday, Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette noted Alvarez and first baseman Christian Walker were two right-handed bats behind Young on the organization's depth chart that they felt good about.

Three Tides were named also named reserves — catcher Steve Clevenger, and pitchers Oliver Drake and Michael Bowden.

Clevenger (Mount St. Joseph) is batting a team-leading .331 in 45 games for the Tides, and has appeared in four games this season for the Orioles.

Drake, who made his major league debut on May 23 and has given up three runs in 7 2/3 major league innings, hasn't allowed a run for the Tides since April 26. He's fanned 43 in 26 2/3 innings in Triple-A, with a 0.68 ERA in 24 appearances.

Bowden has been a valuable swing arm for the Tides, making 22 appearances (eight starts) and lowering his ERA to 2.17 with seven shutout innings Wednesday against Charlotte.

The Tides (45-33) are in first place in the International League's South Division. The International League's best will take on the Pacific Coast League All-Stars in the July 15 showcase.
