Closer Zach Britton will return to the Orioles on Thursday as a new dad.
Britton and his wife Courtney became parents to a baby boy named Zander Lee Britton, who was born late Tuesday night in Burbank, Calif. Both baby and mother are resting and doing well.
Britton is expected to rejoin the Orioles in time to attend Thursday's workout at Camden Yards before Friday's Game 1 of the American League Championship Series.
The Brittons initially received a due date of Oct. 14 and Britton was determined he wasn't going to miss the birth of his first child. He also hoped he wouldn't miss time away from the team during the postseason.
They planned for Courtney, who was in full term, to be induced in California on Thursday – which would have been a scheduled off day between the American League Division Series and American League Championship Series – a plan that also made sense if the Orioles were to play the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the ALCS. The Orioles would be scheduled to have a workout that day in Anaheim, just minutes away from Burbank.
The Angels lost to the Kansas City Royals, but the Orioles' three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers extended their window. Britton flew to California on Monday evening to be with his wife for the birth.
Britton, who converted 37 of 41 save opportunities in the regular season and closed out the Tigers in Game 3 on Sunday night, is expected to be available for Game 1 of the ALCS at Camden Yards on Friday.
