First baseman Steve Pearce and right fielder Nick Markakis weren't in Sunday's lineup, but Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he would expect both to play in the upcoming series against the New York Yankees.
Pearce is expected to be out two to three games with wrist soreness that forced him to be scratched from Saturday's game. Markakis took batting practice Sunday and still is experiencing soreness from a fastball Tuesday that severely bruised the back of his right shoulder.
X-rays on both players were negative. Pearce received a cortisone shot Saturday night.
Despite Pearce's history of wrist issues and Markakis' four-game absence, Showalter said Sunday that he's not overly concerned about whether the two will be questions for the postseason.
"I like the idea that they don't think there's anything structurally wrong with either one," Showalter said. "They've X-rayed, so I'm hoping it will manage itself."
Pearce said his absence from the lineup for the regular-season home finale game was precautionary.
"I could play through it if I wanted to," said Pearce, who missed a chunk of last season because of issues in both wrists. "We have the luxury, being in first place, having the playoffs coming up … that we could work in a couple days off."
Markakis was hoping to play Sunday but couldn't pull the ball in pregame batting practice because of the discomfort.
"He's getting better every day," Showalter said about Markakis. "That's why I'm not, at this point, [concerned]."
