After driving in four runs – including a three-run homer in the ninth – in the Orioles' 10-2 win over the Giants on Sunday afternoon, center fielder Adam Jones took to Twitter claiming that a banana was thrown at him from the stands at AT&T Park in the bottom of the ninth inning.
I'm not going to post the tweet itself because Jones used choice language – Jones' Twitter handle is @SimplyAJ10 to see it yourself – but here's the gist:
"I want to thank whatever [expletive] threw that banana towards my direction in CF in the last inning. Way to show ur class u [expletive]."
Jones didn't mention the incident to the media during postgame interviews Sunday, but his tweet has picked up plenty of interest online. As of 10:45 p.m. EST, it was retweeted more than 1,680 times and favorited nearly 900 times.
He addressed reporters in Arizona on Monday as the team prepared to face the Diamondbacks.
"It's unfortunate that things happen like that, but it ain't gonna stop me, myself and the Orioles," Jones said. "We have games to win. It's mid-August. I've got a bigger concern on my head than someone's ignorance or act of whatever."
Some of Jones' interaction over the tweet prompted him to tweet that he will likely get off social media soon. Jones is one of the game's most active players on Twitter. He has more than 128,000 followers on Twitter.
