Gymnast Whittenburg finishes third at Winter Cup Challenge

Gymnast Donnell Whittenburg of Baltimore finished third in the all-around competition at the Winter Cup Challenge on Saturday night at Las Vegas' Riviera Hotel & Casino's Royale Pavilion.

Paul Ruggeri of Manlius, N.Y., won with a combined total of 175.250, ahead of Steven Legendre of Norman, Okla., with 174.700 and Whittenburg, an Edgewood alumnus, with 174.500.

Whittenburg's best score came on the parallel bars, where he posted a 15.400 in the final rotation. His other scores were 13.850, high bar; 14.950, floor exercise; 13.250, pommel horse; 14.850, still rings; and 15.000, vault.

He won the parallel bars title, posting 30.250.

Whittenburg, a member of the U.S. men's team that won the team bronze medal at the 2014 world championships in Nanning, China, is scheduled to compete in the AT&T American Cup March 7 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
