Baltimore's Donnell Whittenburg won gold in the still rings with a score of 15.925 to edge American John Orozco (15.325) and also took first place in the parallel bars with a 15.800 ahead of silver medalist Cai Weifeng of China (15.750). In the vault, Whittenburg earned silver with a 15.075 while American Eddie Penev won gold with a 15.100.

Donnell Whittenburg's slide out of bounds in the floor routine at Friday night's Pacific Rim Championships cost him the all-around gold medal.

"I just wanted to come out here and get in front of a crowd to get that experience of competing," said Whittenburg, who also placed sixth in the high bars. "It was definitely good for me."

Former Terps G Faust to attend NBA predraft event

After a standout season at Long Beach State, former Maryland and Poly guard Nick Faust was among several dozen upperclassmen invited to this week's Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, a four-day tournament in Virginia held in front of NBA personnel.

Among other notable seniors set to play are Michigan State's Matt Costello, Iowa State's Jameel McKay and Oklahoma's Isaiah Cousins.

Faust averaged 17.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game for the 49ers, who lost in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament. He shot 43.9 percent from the field and 36.9 percent from 3-point range, both career highs, and was named first-team All-Big West Conference as well as the league's Newcomer of the Year.

An All-Metro first-team selection in 2011, Faust spent three seasons at Maryland, leaving in April 2014 as part of a mass exodus from the program. He has signed with agent Daniel Moldovan of Entersport Management.

More men's basketball: Marquette, Ohio State, Vanderbilt and Navy will compete at the Veterans Classic, an annual showcase at the Naval Academy in Annapolis on Veterans Day. The third annual event begins Nov. 11, with Vanderbilt against Marquette at 6:30 p.m. and Ohio State taking on Navy at 9 p.m. Both games will be televised on CBS Sports Network. Men's volleyball: Stevenson will make its first trip to the NCAA tournament after beating Rutgers-Newark, 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21), on Saturday in the Continental Volleyball Conference tournament. The Mustangs (25-7) learned Monday they'll be the sixth seed in the Division III tournament. They'll play Carthage at 8 p.m., Friday at Nazareth College in Pittsford, N.Y.
