Olympic athletes with local ties to watch Wednesday in Rio

Athletes with ties to Maryland and the Baltimore area will take center stage this month in Rio for a chance at Olympic glory. Be sure to check back every day for a schedule of which locals are in action.

Michael Phelps, swimming

Ties to Maryland: Born in Baltimore. Graduated from Towson High School in 2003. Trained at the North Baltimore Aquatic Center before moving to Arizona to train with longtime coach Bob Bowman. Won The Baltimore Sun's High School Athlete of the Year award in 2001.

200M individual medley

Allison Schmitt, swimming

Ties to Maryland: Trained at North Baltimore Aquatic Club with coach Bob Bowman after graduating from Georgia. Remained at NBAC until she moved with Bowman to Arizona State last year.

Ties to Maryland: Born and raised in Baltimore. Played basketball at St. Frances for four years before spending a year at Patterson Prep in Lenoir, N.C. Was named The Baltimore Sun's All-Metro Player of the Year in 2003. Averaged a double double and won a Baltimore Catholic League title as a senior at St. Frances.

Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant, men's basketball

Ties to Maryland:

Anthony: Moved from Brooklyn, N.Y., to Baltimore at age 8. Played three years at Towson Catholic before transferring to Oak Hill (Va.) Academy. Was The Baltimore Sun's All-Metro Player of the Year and Baltimore Catholic League's Player of the Year in 2001. … Founded the Carmelo Anthony Youth Development Center in East Baltimore in 2006 to help support disadvantaged youths.

Durant: Born in Suitland. Eventually graduated from Montrose Christian in Rockville after spending his first two years of high school at National Christian in Fort Washington and his third at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. Played in the McDonald's All American Game as a senior.

Gary Antuanne Russell, boxing

Ties to Maryland: Grew up in Capitol Heights, just outside Washington. Lives in the area and has five brothers, all of whom are named Gary and three of whom also box. Gary Antuanne was the valedictorian of his high school class at Croom High School.

Katie Bam and Jill Witmer, women's field hockey

Ties to Maryland:

Bam: Formerly Katie O'Donnell, she played field hockey for the Terps from 2007 to 2010 and became the most decorated player in program history. She won a national championship in 2010 as a senior, and received the Honda Sport Award as well as the Women's Sports Foundation's Sportswoman of the Year Award. She also earned ACC Offensive Player of the Year honors four times.

Witmer: Played for the Terps from 2010 to 2013.
