Olympic athletes with local ties to watch Saturday in Rio

Athletes with ties to Maryland and the Baltimore area will take center stage this month in Rio for a chance at Olympic glory. Be sure to check back every day for a schedule of which locals are in action.

Michael Phelps, swimming

Ties to Maryland: Born in Baltimore. Graduated from Towson High School in 2003. Trained at the North Baltimore Aquatic Center before moving to Arizona to train with longtime coach Bob Bowman. Won The Baltimore Sun's High School Athlete of the Year award in 2001.

Christina Epps and Thea LaFond (Dominica), track and field

Ties to Maryland: 

Epps: Competed in the triple jump at Coppin State and is the first U.S. Olympian in school history. Graduated in 2013, but still had a year of eligibility remaining after tearing her ACL as a junior and missing a full season. Took graduate classes while finishing career in 2014. Still trains full-time at Coppin State with coach Alecia Shields-Gadson and works as an academic adviser in the athletic department.

LaFond: Maryland graduate and Silver Spring resident. Represented Dominica at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland and finaled in the triple jump, placing 11th.

Ties to Maryland: Grew up in Ellicott City. Graduated from Centennial in 2011. Trained at the Maryland Volleyball Program in Rockville. Played for the U.S. Youth national team in 2010 and 2011 while in high school. He also lettered in soccer at Centennial.

Joe Morris, sailing

Ties to Maryland: Grew up in Annapolis. Graduated from Severn School in 2008. Began sailing at Severn Sailing Association. Won a single-handed national championship as a junior at Severn and a double-handed national championship as a senior.

Katie Bam and Jill Witmer, women's field hockey

Ties to Maryland:

Bam: Formerly Katie O'Donnell, she played field hockey for the Terps from 2007-10 and became the most decorated player in program history. She won a national championship in 2010 as a senior, and received the Honda Sport Award as well as the Women's Sports Foundation's Sportswoman of the Year Award. She also earned ACC Offensive Player of the Year honors four times.

Witmer: Played for the Terps from 2010-2013.

Ekene Ibekwe (Nigeria), men's basketball

Ties to Maryland: Played four seasons at Maryland (2004-2007). … In 2004, became the first freshman to lead the Terps in blocks since Joe Smith in 1994.
