Olympic athletes with local ties to watch Sunday in Rio

Athletes with ties to Maryland and the Baltimore area will take center stage this month in Rio for a chance at Olympic glory. Be sure to check back every day for a schedule of which locals are in action.

Ties to Maryland: Grew up in Bethesda, where she attended Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart.

Angel McCoughtry, women's basketball

Ties to Maryland: Born and raised in Baltimore. Played basketball at St. Frances for four years before spending a year at Patterson Prep in Lenoir, N.C. Was named The Baltimore Sun's All-Metro Player of the Year in 2003. Averaged a double double and won a Baltimore Catholic League title as a senior at St. Frances.

Ties to Maryland: Grew up in Ellicott City. Graduated from Centennial in 2011. Trained at the Maryland Volleyball Program in Rockville. Played for the U.S. Youth national team in 2010 and 2011 while in high school. He also lettered in soccer at Centennial.

Ties to Maryland: Played four seasons at Maryland (2004-2007). … In 2004, became the first freshman to lead the Terps in blocks since Joe Smith in 1994.

Toni-Ann Williams (Jamaica), women's gymnastics

Ties to Maryland: Grew up in Randallstown and graduated from Roland Park in 2014. Trained at United Gymnastix in Reisterstown throughout her whole club career. Attends California.
