Jessica Long of Baltimore won her 36th career world championship title Wednesday at the Para Swimming World Championships in Manchester, England.

Katie Ledecky of Bethesda won the 1,500-meter freestyle with ease on Tuesday at the World Aquatics Championships to tie Baltimore native Michael Phelps’ record at the worlds for individual gold medals.

Samantha Heyison, an Adamstown resident and Urbana High senior, is the reigning Class 4A state champion in the discus and is a U.S. Paralympics national titlist in the discus and shot put.

Tom McMillen, a forward from Maryland and a member of the 1972 team, said the IOC saying players having to accept the medals is “sort of ridiculous” and came up with a possible solution to the impasse: Have a third-party accept the medals so they could be placed in the Hall of Fame.
