Breeders' Cup selections for Saturday's races at Churchill Downs

Del Mar’s fall meet starts next Friday, but we gave staff writer Jeff Nahill a fictional $500 to play the Breeders’ Cup races at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. The first day didn’t go well, but there are still nine more chances to make up for it.

Friday’s results

It wasn’t a good day betting wise or selection wise. Our only winner was Game Winner in the Juvenile and to be honest I was rooting for my 40-1 long shot Go Knicks to get me some more seed money but he finished second. As I thought, the turf course either was loved by horses or hated and my horses, particularly Summering, didn’t get a hold on the “good” course. We ended up losing all of our $160 bet but still have $340 for Saturday.

Saturday overview

This is without a doubt one of the best days of betting on the calendar for horse players. Stick to your opinions, no matter what the price and you might be rewarded. My key horses for today are Abel Tasman (7-2) in the Distaff, Limousine Liberal (6-1) in the Sprint and Finley’sluckycharm(10-1) in the Filly and Mare Sprint. Throw out Abel Tasman’s last race. Trainer Bob Baffert said she got sick immediately after the race. She’s better than that and I don’t see any way she goes off at 7-2. Liberal and Finley are quite frankly horses for courses. They love Churchill Downs. They have 12 wins over the strip. Let’s hope it’s 14 at the end of the day.
