Logo unveiled for 2016 Preakness

The Preakness went chose a "retro design with contemporary edge" for its 2016 logo.

The Maryland Jockey Club unveiled the official logo for the 141st running of the Preakness on Tuesday. The middle jewel of racing’s Triple Crown will take place Saturday, May 21, at Pimlico Race Course.

For the 17th consecutive year, the Leffler Agency designed the official logo of the Preakness.

"In the spirit of tradition, our agency’s creative team successfully captured all of the customary logo elements into a unique look for the 141st year, while achieving our goal of creating a classic, almost retro, design with a contemporary edge," Leffler Agency CEO Heather Connellee said in a statement.

First contested in 1873, the Preakness is one of thoroughbred horse racing's most valued Grade 1 stakes races and one of the largest single-day sporting events in the United States. A record crowd of 131,680 watched American Pharoah win the Preakness in May on his way to becoming the 12th Triple Crown winner and first in 37 years.

Tickets for the 141st Preakness went on sale Oct. 5 as did renewal notices. Renewal notices have a deadline of Jan. 15. 2016.
