Meet the 13 Triple Crown winners as Justify joins the club with Belmont victory

The Baltimore Sun

Justify became the 13th Triple Crown winner — and the first since 2015 and American Pharoah — by holding off nine challengers in today’s Belmont Stakes.

Although Justify won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in the mud, it was a beautiful day in Elmont, N.Y., home of Belmont Park.

Bob Baffert trained American Pharoah in 2015 as the horse became the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years and he also trains Justify. Baffert became just the second trainer to win two Triple Crowns, following James “Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons, who won all three races with the father-son pair of Gallant Fox (1930) and Omaha (1935).
