Terps picked to finish 5thin Big Ten preseason poll

There weren't many surprises in the unofficial Big Ten preseason media poll released Tuesday. Michigan State was the unanimous pick of the 28 voters. Maryland finished in a tie for fifth. Wisconsin center Ethan Happ and Spartans forward Miles Bridges were unanimous first-team selections, and Bridges got every vote for Player of the Year. Not a single Maryland player received a vote for first-team consideration, though Bruno Fernando got a vote for Freshman of the Year over Michigan State's Jaren Jackson Jr., who earned the honor. ... Maryland sophomore forward Justin Jackson was one of 21 players named to the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award watch list, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced.

Patriot League: Loyola Maryland senior guard Andre Walker and Navy senior guard Shawn Anderson were named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team. Navy was picked to finish third in the league and Loyola was picked to finish sixth.

Colonial Athletic Association: Towson was picked to finish second in the CAA. The Tigers, who return four starters, received two votes for No. 1. Towson senior guards Mike Morsell and Deshaun Morman were named to the preseason All-CAA team. College of Charleston received 38 first-place votes.

Carroll Community College plans to add athletic teams

Carroll Community College is one of two in the state without intercollegiate sports, but that statistic is about to change. The college's Board of Trustees made it official at its monthly meeting Wednesday night and authorized Carroll's venture into creating a sports program. Intercollegiate sports are expected to debut in the fall of 2019, with men's and women's cross country, and men's and women's soccer.

Men's college soccer: McDaniel senior Nick Over (Winters Mill) was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III South Defensive Player of the Week. ... Navy senior goalkeeper Mac Burke was named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week.

Women's college volleyball: Stevenson wrapped up the top spot and No. 1 seed in the MAC Commonwealth Championship for the sixth straight season with a 3-0 win over Lebanon Valley.

College field hockey: Seniors Carrie Hanks and Lein Holsboer of Maryland (11-5) are two of 38 seniors selected for the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Senior Game on Nov. 17 at Louisville.
