Digest (March 1): Laurel Park hosting handicapping contest Saturday

The Maryland Jockey Club is hosting its spring session of the Champions Handicapping Tournament on Saturday at Laurel Park . Berths to the NTRA/DRF National Handicapping Championship, Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge and Big One tournaments are on the line, as well as guaranteed prize money to the top 10 finishers. A maximum of two entries per person will be accepted at a cost of $300 each, covering the $100 entry fee and $200 bankroll. The Champions Tournament will be capped at 300 entries. The tournament winner will have their choice of one of two berths to the NHC or a berth in the BCBC or Big One. The second-place finisher has the choice of one of the remaining three berths, the third-place finisher has the choice of the final two berths and the fourth-place finisher will receive the remaining berth. Tracks available for the tournament are Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park, Aqueduct, Tampa Bay Downs and Santa Anita Park through Race 6, with no mandatory races. The minimum wager is $20.



UMBC's Maura, Lyles earnAmerica East hoops awards

UMBC guards K.J. Maura (Defensive Player of the Year) and Jairus Lyles (first-team all-conference) earned top America East Conference men's basketball honors. Maura was also named to the third team, while forward Joe Sherburne was named to the academic team and forward Daniel Akin was named to the rookie team.


Men's college lacrosse: Maryland attackman Logan Wisnauskas was named Big Ten Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week. ... Stevenson senior Dominic DeFazio was named to the USILA Division III Team of the Week.

Women's college lacrosse: Due to expected inclement weather on Friday night, the Navy women's lacrosse game against Winthrop at Tierney Field in Sparks has been postponed to Saturday at 6 p.m. The projected weather calls for a high-wind warning with wind speeds reaching 50 to 60 mph, prompting the move. Navy enters the game with a 3-1 overall record, while Winthrop is 1-2. The game will be the first for Navy at the US Lacrosse headquarters.

Men's pro lacrosse: Major League Lacrosse will hold its college draft April 18 at the US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks.

Women's college hockey: After recording a pair of goals in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference quarterfinal victory, Stevenson senior Monica Pozuc was named the UCHC Player of the Week.
