Members of the Perry Hall boys basketball team were part of a support system that helped the boys soccer team claim its first state title in program history this fall.
Now, the No. 12 Gators (21-3) are working on matching the feat on the hardwood, starting with Thursday's Class 4A semifinal game against Eleanor Roosevelt. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Maryland's Xfinity Center.
With each of the three home wins on their way to claiming the North region, Perry Hall coach George Panageotou said the support became bigger and louder. A thrilling 62-60 win over Springbrook in Friday's region title game was the ideal capper.
"We really got a huge gathering of students, alumni and faculty, so it's been great," Panageotou said. "When the kids see that, it changes in. We had to turn people away because we couldn't get any more fans in there. It really makes the kids proud, the staff proud and it's been a fun ride."
The Gators won't have to worry about turning fans away at their next stop as they get the chance to play at Xfinity Center. Sophomore center Laquill Hardnett averages 14 points and 11.5 rebounds -- one of three Gators averaging double figures in points.
For Eleanor Roosevelt, senior guard Naji Marshall leads a balanced offense with 17 points per game with seven others averaging five or more.
