John Carroll quarterback Kurt Rawlings and receivers Alex Rasmussen and Ky'el Hemby took time out from their game with Boys' Latin, which was suspended by lightning Friday, to win the Ravens High School QB Challenge Sunday.
The trio will be back in action this afternoon to complete their game at Boys' Latin, but Sunday they won a shootout against Loyola Blakefield quarterback Jason Smith and receivers Dana Young and Andreus Price in the QB Challenge at M&T Bank Stadium during halftime of the Ravens-Browns game.
Rawlings, who has throw for more than 1,900 yards this season, hit Rasmussen with a 55-yard completion to win the challenge, in which each quarterback gets two chances, each to a different receiver. Both quarterbacks completed both passes for more than 40 yards.
Smith went first and hit Young with a 42-yard pass. Rawlings then hit Hemby for 45 yards.
Smith countered with a 48-yard completion to Price before Rawlings finished it with the winning pass to Rasmussen.
In the game against Boys' Latin, suspended with 55 seconds left in the third quarter, Rawlings had thrown for 191 yards and three touchdowns as the No. 9 Patriots led the host Lakers, 27-20. He ran for the other touchdown. The game resumes at 4:15 p.m.
For their QB Challenge victory, the three Patriots won $250 College Savings Plan of Maryland accounts and John Carroll received a $500 Under Armour gift card for its athletic department. Rawlings and Smith each received a football autographed by one of the Ravens.
There will be a QB Challenge at halftime of every Ravens' home game with the next one featuring Tuscarora vs. Linganore on Nov. 1 when the Ravens play the San Diego Chargers. There is no season winner, just a winner each week.
