Dundalk man fights for better awareness of concussions, other traumatic brain injuries

More than six years ago, Scott Collier suffered a traumatic brain injury in an automobile accident. Though he's recovered, he says the injury changed his personality temporarily and his life forever.

Now, he wants to use that experience to improve awareness of traumatic brain injuries, especially concussions at the youth and high school sports level.

On Tuesday afternoon at CCBC's Dundalk campus, Collier said he plans to hold a seminar on traumatic brain injuries that he expects will be attended by representatives from Baltimore County Public Schools and county Department of Recreation and Parks Director Barry F. Williams.

Collier said on Monday that he will discuss baseline testing that should be conducted before clearing an athlete to play.

"I just want to make the parents aware and do the best we can to make sure no one is injured," Collier said. "And [if] they are injured, I want to make sure we’re following the proper protocol."

In September, Collier hosted the TBI Awareness and Prevention Picnic and resource fair at the CCBC-Dundalk. He's also started a petition to have Dr. Phil McGraw address traumatic brain injuries on his daytime television program.

He says athletes in every contact sport should have to wear helmets.

"We really need to take the steps to protect everybody," said Collier, who runs the Dundalk TV YouTube channel. "These are senseless injuries."
