McDonogh could finish No. 1 nationally in both boys and girls soccer

The No. 1 McDonogh boys soccer team (19-0) will try to make history Sunday as it aims to repeat as Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champions and complete the program's first perfect season.

The Eagles will take on either No. 2 Loyola Blakefield or No. 4 Archbishop Curley -- those teams meet in the semifinals Friday -- in Sunday's 5:30 p.m. title game at Stevenson.

The McDonogh boys are currently No. 1 in Top Drawer Soccer's Fab 50 national rankings, and a win would all but guarantee the Eagles finishing at the top.

The McDonogh girls, who completed a perfect 15-0 season with a second straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship last Sunday, could also be No. 1 when the next Top Drawer Soccer Fab 50 rankings come out Tuesday.

The Eagles' girls are currently No. 2, but No. 1 Northern Highlands (N.J.) suffered its first loss of the season Monday. Since Fab 50's inception in 1999 -- covering 45 ranking seasons (15 froom each fall, winter and spring) -- one school has never finished No. 1 in both the boys and girls rankings at the same time.

"Obviously it's something that has never been done," McDonogh boys coach Brandon Quaranta said. "Our girls program is a special program. [Coach] Harry [Canellakis] does a tremendous job and they've won championships in four of the last five years which is incredible in itself. We want to win a championship and whether that's undefeated or whateverit is, that's our main objective. But again, there could be that cherry on top where if we're able to somehow pull it off, it's something we're going to be really proud of."
