TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Tuscaloosa police have dropped domestic violence charges against Alabama cornerback Cyrus Jones, a former three-sport star at Gilman.
Police said in a statement Friday that probable cause existed for the charges filed against Jones, but they were dropped because he "in fact attempted to de-escalate the situation by contacting the Tuscaloosa Police Department."
Jones was charged Tuesday night with two domestic violence misdemeanors: third-degree harassment and third-degree criminal mischief. He had allegedly threatened a 22-year-old woman in front of a witness and damaged her phone.
The statement says that Tuscaloosa police recommended that the charges be dismissed and the City Attorney's office agreed.
"First of all, we would like to thank God for watching over us as a family," said Jones' father, Cyrus Jones. "We're thankful the truth came out and we can just put this behind us and move on."
The elder Jones said he appreciated the work of the investigators and it was simply a matter of "two people who were in a relationship that had a disagreement" that got blown out of proportion.
Jones is Alabama's most experienced cornerback and earned second-team All-Southeastern Conference honors from The Associated Press last season.
He was named The Baltimore Sun's Male Athlete of the Year as a senior after leading the Greyhounds to Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championships in football, basketball and outdoor track and field during the 2011-12 school year.
