Carroll Varsity Roundup (May 23): Liberty's Emily Brecker, Noelle Htwar into girls doubles state tennis finals

Carroll County hasn’t had a girls doubles state champion since 2005, but Liberty’s Emily Brecker and Noelle Htwar have a shot at ending that drought.

The Lions juniors won a pair of matches at the Class 2A state tennis tournament Thursday at Wilde Lake Tennis Club in Columbia, and advanced to the state finals Saturday.

Brecker and Htwar defeated Marriotts Ridge’s Avani Badugu and Savana Owens in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) before taking down Easton’s Allison Cherwien and Anna Ewing (6-0, 6-3) in the semifinals. Brecker and Htwar raised their record to 20-0.

Carroll’s last girls doubles state champs came in 2005, when Westminster’s Melissa Wallace and Alyssa Thayer took the title. North Carroll’s Brooke Foster and Heather Easter won in 1999 for the county’s other state crown.

Liberty’s boys doubles team of Dylan Gettier and Ray Woodward (19-1) won a quarterfinal match Thursday, but lost in the semifinals against Easton’s Lucas Joshi and Aidan Steinly. The Lions had Tyger Zan (11-6) in boys singles action, and Zan lost his quarterfinals match.

In mixed doubles, Century’s Kaitlin Conway and Michael Napolitano lost in their quarterfinal match against Stephen Alam and Veronica Cueller of Marriotts Ridge.

In 1A boys singles, Francis Scott Key’s Brandon Bimestefer (10-4) bowed out in the quarterfinals against Brian Wilsno of Frederick Douglass.

The 3A and 4A tournaments begin Friday, and all championship and consolation matches are set for Saturday. Manchester Valley’s Matthew Fairchild, the county and 3A West Region champ at 19-0, will be in boys singles action, while Westminster’s Audrey Detrow and Amber Manspeaker are in the girls doubles field.

The MSABC’s Futures Game is slated for June 20 at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie — North vs. West at noon, East vs. South at 3. The West team features Man Valley junior Brett DeWees, Westminster junior Marcos Mendez, and Winters Mill junior Conner Peters. Sykesville resident Jared Hurlburt, who plays for CHEN in Ellicott City, is also on the West roster.
