Carroll Varsity Roundup (April 10): Manchester Valley baseball blanks Century

Manchester Valley ended Century’s winning streak in style Wednesday afternoon, when Kyle Scott tossed six shutout innings and the host Mavericks won 5-0 in Carroll County Athletic League action.

Scott struck out six and walked one in the victory, while Brett DeWees had two hits and four RBIs for the Mavs (5-3, 3-2 CCAL). DeWees and Tommy Murray each had doubles for MV.

Jake Diehl, Hunter Rose, Jared Lamb, and Brandon Will had hits for Century (7-2, 5-2), which took a six-game win streak into the game. Lamb struck out six in three innings.

Winters Mill 3, South Carroll 2

Recap: At Westminster, the Falcons scored three in the third and posted their first win of the season (1-6, 1-3 CCAL). Slater Seitz hurled a complete game, and Josh Popielski had two RBIs. Spencer Monroe and Connor Peters had two hits apiece. Logan Miller had two hits and a double, and Alex Hess also had two hits for the Cavaliers (5-3, 4-3).

Westminster 14, Francis Scott Key 8

Recap: At Uniontown, Haden Hoff powered the Owls (4-4, 3-2 CCAL) to their third straight win with two triples and a grand slam. Key (0-5, 0-5) got doubles from Jarrett Hise, Joe Eckard, and Justin Haines.

Gerstell 6, Severn 5

Recap: At Finksburg, Chris Hagan went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple, and Graham Vaeth collected two hits and a double for the Falcons (4-3, 4-3 MIAA B).

Softball

Westminster 9, Francis Scott Key 2

Recap: At Uniontown, Laura Tipton had two hits and three RBIs for the Owls (6-2, 3-1 CCAL). Sophia Griffith went 3-for-5 for Westminster. The Eagles fell to 2-5, 1-5, despite two hits from Rachel Wright.

Winters Mill 12, South Carroll 8

Recap: At Westminster on Tuesday, the Falcons resumed their game from March 25 and prevailed behind Ansley Annable’s three home runs and a double. Annable went 5-for-5 for WM. Olivia Reardon, Sydni Carroll, and Haily Medrano had two hits each for SC. Their second game was halted in the top of the sixth with the Falcons winning 12-10.

Boys Tennis

Winters Mill 3, South Carroll 2

Recap: At Winfield, Chase Burker and Matheo Cuenca won singles matches for the Falcons (4-3, 3-3 CCAL). Ben McNally and Mason Hintermeister won No. 3 doubles in three sets for SC (1-8, 0-6).

Century 3, Manchester Valley 2

Recap: At Eldersburg, Kyle Kropfelder and Danny Arriola won No. 2 doubles in three sets for the Knights (6-1, 6-0 CCAL). Matthew Fairchild and Chase Estes won singles matches for the Mavs (4-3, 3-3).

Westminster 5, Francis Scott Key 0

Recap: At Westminster, Adam Long and Garrett Warren won in three sets at No. 2 doubles for the Owls (2-4, 2-4 CCAL). FSK is 1-5, 1-5.

Girls Tennis

South Carroll 5, Winters Mill 0

Recap: At Winfield, Faith Hawkins and Nicole Strong, and Julia Simoncini and Rachel Linn won No. 2 and 3 doubles matches for the Cavs (7-2, 5-1 CCAL) in 6-0, 6-0 fashion. WM is 1-6, 0-6.

Century 3, Manchester Valley 2

Recap: At Eldersburg, Michaela Wolcott and Jess McClelland won No. 1 doubles 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) as part of a doubles sweep for Century (5-2, 5-1 CCAL).

Westminster 4, Francis Scott Key 1

Recap: At Westminster, Kate Ruppert and Jennifer Sorkin won singles matches for the Owls (4-2, 4-2 CCAL). Karla Stonesifer and Jocelyn Snader won at first doubles for FSK (0-6, 0-6).

Girls Lacrosse

Gerstell 16, Winters Mill 4

Recap: At Westminster, the Falcons improved to 3-6 with their third win in four games. Abby Morrison and Cortney Ricker scored two goals apiece and Maddie Sprinkle added one for the Falcons. Becca Thompson had two goals and one assist for WM (2-4).

Boys Track & Field

Man Valley 109.5, Century 69, South Carroll 49, Liberty 39.5

Recap: At Eldersburg, Kacy Montgomery won the 100, 200, and 400 dashes for the Mavericks, who also got golds from Sean Bradley (800), Aiden Neal (1,600), and Colin Evans (long jump, triple jump). MV also won the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Century’s Jalen Stanton won the 110 hurdles and high jump, and ran a leg on the Knights’ winning 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Girls Track & Field

South Carroll 121, Century 51, Man Valley 45, Liberty 31

Recap: At Eldersburg, the Cavs had gold medals from Grayson Fipps (100), Lexi Winkler (400), Brooke Flanigan (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Sarah Langille (long jump), and Megan Plummer (discus, shot put). SC won the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, and 4x800 relays. MV’s Rubie Goffena won the 800 and 1,600 runs.
