Volleyball: Player of the Year

Hannah Schmidt

Mount de Sales, hitter, senior

Coming into the season, Schmidt was under a lot of pressure to perform. The senior had been a part of two straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference titles, and some doubted whether her leadership could lead the Sailors to another title.

Schmidt had played a support role the previous three seasons behind

Katy Buck

(last season's Baltimore Sun Player of the Year) and

Kasey Mercier

(an All-Metro first-teamer two seasons ago). Schmidt stepped up in a big way, leading the team in kills (292), and aces (59), and finishing second in digs (138) en route to another A Conference title.

She spent the offseason working on her defensive skills, and the improvement was evident in her play. She can more than hold her own at any of the six spots on the court.

Her leadership and mentoring of younger players proved to be a major factor in the Sailors' success this season.

Schmidt will attend UMBC on a volleyball scholarship next season.
