No. 2 Mount Saint Joseph and No. 4 Maryvale both used strong depth to win track and field championships on Saturday at Calvert Hall.

Mount Saint Joseph captured its first Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association title in 12 years, led by a solid effort from sprinter Manny Patterson. Kendall Gray paced Maryvale to the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland championship, the Lions' third crown this year.

Saturday was the second part of the two-day meet, with the opening day held at McDonogh on Wednesday. For the Gaels, Patterson won the 100 and 200 meters (10.68 and 21.89 seconds). He also ran on the victorious 400 and 800 relays (42.79 and 1:30.43).

Overall, Mount Saint Joseph won six of the 18 events and had 157 points to beat No. 10 Gilman (134) and Loyola Blakefield (113). The Gaels, who also took the MIAA A Conference regular-season title, also scored wins from Quinton Coe in the high jump (6-0) and Christian Carter (shot put, 48-10.25)

"It's a great experience just being a part of this," said Patterson, a senior who will play football at Maine in the fall. "We've got a lot of strong runners that put in their all each time."

Maryvale raced to a big lead after the first day and cruised to victory with 184 points. Runner-up Mount de Sales (137.5) received good performances but the Lions finished this year's triple crown as they also won the conference's cross country and indoor track titles.

Maryvale took seven events and finished in the top three 11 times. Gray won the 1,600 (5:15.03) and 3,200 (11:31.20) while teammates Cameron Hinton (400, 56.08), Sydney King (high jump, 5-0) and Lonnie Garrett (pole vault, 9-0) also scored victories.

Maryvale also won the 800 and 1,600 relays in times of 1:46.46 and 3:59.55, respectively.

"It's been quite a journey between cross country and indoor and outdoor," Maryvale coach Jason Miller said. "It's surreal. It's probably not going to hit me until later on or next week."

Dalton Hengst of McDonogh and Spalding's Dylan Beard were the only other multiple event winners.

Hengst took the MIAA's 1,600 (4:24.46) and 3,200 (9.28.10) and came in a close second to Loyola's Kenny Rowe in the 800. Beard won the 110 and 300 hurdles (14.65 and 41.09).

Matt Selba of Curley turned in one of the best individual performances of the meet when he won the discus with a throw of 171 feet, 9.5 inches. That, according to Athletic.net, would be the best throw in the state this season. It also set a new record championship record.

"Honestly, it didn't really look as far as I thought it would be," Selba said. "I couldn't have done it without the support of my teammates, and my coaches kind of gave the confidence I needed to really do that, especially with the form."
