Clark wins 8 matches by pin as McDonogh sweeps its Holiday Duals

McDonogh's Jack Clark continued his dominance of the local wresting scene, winning all eight of his matches with pins to lead the host and top-ranked Eagles to the championship at the fifth-annual McDonogh Holiday Duals, which concluded Friday.

The Eagles won all eight of their dual matches to claim the tournament title for the third time.

Kellam High School of Virginia Beach finished second with a 6-2 record. Good Counsel went 5-3 and defeated River Hill (also 5-3) head-to-head to take third.

For his effort, Clark, who wrestles at 145 pounds, also won the outstanding wrestler for the tournament.

Clark's best match came Thursday, when the sophomore beat West Virginia Class AAA state champion Dylan Ceravalo from Charles Town's Washington High School with a pin 3:35 into the match. Clark did pay a price for the victory, leaving the match with a black eye.

"It happened in the first minute of the match," said Clark, who is 25-3 on the season. "I had him wrapped up and he lifted his head up and got me in the eye. It swelled up towards the end of the match, but I was fine."

Clark said he knew nothing about Ceravalo entering the match, and it was only after the match that he found out he had defeated a state champion.

"Nobody told me until the match was over," said Clark. "He was the toughest match I had. I started out aggressive, and I could tell I was wearing him down."

Good Counsel's Jamie Warren didn't fare quite as well against Clark. He was pinned just 12 seconds into their match.

The tournament win was another stepping stone for the Eagles, who host No. 2 St. Paul's on Friday. Coach Pete Welch says he's happy with the progress of the team, but it's still not exactly where he wants it to be.

"We have a few major injuries and a heavyweight who is still with the football team," Welch said. "We just need to get everybody healthy, and then we can make a good run at the end of the season."

No. 10 River Rill had little trouble dispatching No. 12 Glenelg, 54-15, in their dual. The Gladiators then beat Old Mill (36-33), which edged River Hill (37-35).

Loyola (4-4) took fifth place, Glenelg (3-5) was sixth, Washington (2-6) defeated Old Mill (also 2-6) head-to-head to finish seventh, and Brentsville (1-7)of Virginia finished ninth.
