In honor of breast cancer awareness, host and undefeated Reginald Lewis came out wearing pink jerseys for its showdown with undefeated Northwestern in what amounted to the City Division II championship.By the end of the game, they had Northwestern (6-1, 5-1) seeing red.The Falcons outscored Northwestern 21-0 in the second half en route to a 35-6 win Friday afternoon. Alfonzo Graham led Lewis (7-0, 5-0) with 81 yards rushing and an interception return for a touchdown."My message [at the half] to them was to keep fighting, and that we had to finish," Falcons coach Elwood Townsend said. "We had some good drives in the first half, but we couldn't finish. We made some boneheaded decisions that cost us."Lewis went into the half with a 14-6 lead on the strength of two touchdowns by Shamal Webb (one on a 72-yard kickoff return and one on a 7-yard run), but the Falcons had trouble stopping the Wildcats when they had the ball. The Falcons looked like a different team in the second half. The defense became much more aggressive, holding Northwestern to minus-7 yards on the first offensive series of the half. After getting the ball back, it took Lewis just five plays to increase the lead. Malik Green carried most of the load on the drive, running for 19 yards to get the ball to the Northwestern 15-yard line. He duplicated the run on the next play, scoring from 15 yards out to give the Falcons a 22-6 lead with 4:33 left in the third quarter.Lewis put the game away on the next Northwestern possession. As the Wildcats set up to pass at their own 10, quarterback David Medlin's pass was tipped by a receiver at the 15-yard line. It landed in the hands of Falcons defender Graham at the 18-yard line. Graham eluded a defender and ran untouched into the end zone to increase the lead to 28-6 with 2:47 left in the third quarter. The Falcons closed out the scoring with a 2-yard run from senior quarterback Dariun Miller with 5:43 left in the game.Miller said it was great to win the game, but the Falcons still have some work to do."We came out and did what we were supposed to do," Miller said, "but we didn't play well all four quarters. That's something we need to work on going forward. We made some adjustments on defense [at the half], and we started communicating more. That paid off for us."Graham agrees that the team is still a work in progress."We did great, but we have to keep getting better," said Graham, a junior. "We were a little bit nervous when we came out, but we came together and got the job done."Townsend said he has big goals for the team."We didn't practice well all week, and they needed to calm down," Townsend said. "I told them this was not a big game. A state championship is a big game. Our next goal is to sharpen up our game, win the first playoff game in school history, and see how far we can go in the playoffs."
