Late surge gives McDonogh swimming title

Midway through Sunday's Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland Swimming Championships at McDonogh, the host Eagles found themselves in an unfamiliar position — trailing Notre Dame Prep. After leading most of the meet, the Eagles were disqualified in the 200 freestyle relay when a swimmer started too early.

Thankfully for McDonogh coach Scott Ward, the Eagles rallied to win the final three events and take the A Conference title over the Blazers.

McDonogh scored 451.50 points in the victory, followed by Notre Dame Prep with 440.50 and Mount de Sales with 336.

"We called a meeting with the captains and some of the seniors [after the disqualification], and told them this is not over," said Ward. "We had some great efforts to put us back in the position to win. I'm so proud of these girls."

The comeback began when Eagles' freshman Meghan Lee won the backstroke with a time of 55.21. A victory by Erin Vance in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.28) gave McDonogh a five point lead in the team standings entering the final event, the 400 freestyle relay.

The Eagles dominated the final event, setting an IAAM record of 3:32.72 and defeating the second-place Blazers by almost four full seconds. Had they lost the event to Notre Dame Prep, they would have finished second.

"It meant so much to win this for our team," said Lee, who swam the third leg in the final relay. "I tried not to focus on the pressure, but we got it done. My teammates are always there for me, and it feels great to be there for them."

Lee also had a great day individually, winning the 100 butterfly in a meet-record time of 54.26. Other winners for the Eagles were Vance in the 200 individual medley (2:05.94), and Alayna Nielson in the 100 freestyle (53.06).

The second-place Blazers had winners in the 200 freestyle (Ellie McComas,1:56.43) and 500 freestyle (Grace Potis, 5:04.98). Notre Dame Prep also won the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.75).

In the B Conference meet, Roland Park erased three years of frustration and second-place finishes to win it's first-ever IAAM Conference title. The Reds won five events en-route to the title. They dominated the event, scoring 453 points, 147 more than second-place Bryn Mawr.

"It feels great to finally win this," Roland Park coach Sean Donmoyer said. "We had a lot of swimmers who were part of the teams that finished second, so this is pretty special for them. Everybody had an outstanding meet, and our seniors showed a lot of leadership."

The Reds won the 200 medley relay (1:57.28), the 500 freestyle (Julia Ball, 5:18.96), the 200 freestyle relay (1:45.04), the 100 backstroke (Abby Rapuano, 1:02.41), and the 400 freestyle relay (3:44.27).

"When I was a freshman, we lost by threepoints, and it's always been a goal of ours to win this title," said MarsieSalvatori, who swam the second leg of the 200 medley relay. "Since the schoolhas never won a swimming title this is really amazing for us."
