Destiny Ryles scored a game-high 21 points as St. Paul’s defeated No. 11 Mount de Sales, 57-48, in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference girls basketball championship game Sunday.
A 23-4 midgame run helped St. Paul’s (18-3) to a 36-19 lead 90 seconds into the third quarter. Mount de Sales (23-4) slowly cut the lead down and got it to two at 46-44 on a 3-pointer by Kristen Zaranski (20 points) with 2:10 left in the fourth quarter.
Ryles made two free throws 10 seconds later and followed that with a steal she turned into a layup for a 50-44 lead with 1:38 remaining.
Devan Conrad (17 points) hit a long 3 from the right corner with one minute left to lock up the victory.
The Sailors had beaten St. Paul’s during the regular season, but things were different this time. Mount de Sales made just two baskets in the first half, staying close with free throws, but the St. Paul’s defense kept everything under control and stopped the late rally.
“We knew they were going to be coming,” St. Paul’s coach Pat Conrad said of the late Mount de Sales rally. “No lead is safe, but they executed the game plan to perfection on defense.”
