Setting records is nothing new for Franklin pole vaulter Olivia Gruver. After all, heading into this season's indoor track and field campaign, she had the highest mark in state history.
So when Oakdale's Jackie McNulty vaulted 13 feet, 3.25 inches in the Class 2A state championship meet to claim the record for herself, Gruver set her sights on going higher.
When 3A athletes took to the Prince George's County Sports and Learning Complex the following week, Gruver retook the record at 13-4, which was the fifth-best mark in the country this season. That effort helped the Indians to the 3A team state crown.
"One of Olivia's strongest assets is that she's a great competitor who performs when the stage is biggest," Franklin coach Paul Hannsen said. "She also has a knack for stepping up on final attempts on any of her jumps."
Gruver will head to Kentucky in the fall on an athletic scholarship.
