Jeff Sanborn has been a part of the McDonogh track and field program for 31 years and is stepping aside after this school year. He'll still work with the cross country program but was able to end his track career in style when his girls rallied to edge Maryvale, 170.5-164.5, in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland championship meet.
The Eagles girls have won 12 consecutive outdoor track titles and were especially driven to capture this one for their coach. Sanborn is their leader and has been a huge force in the program, a coach who athletes and other coaches respect. He probably walks 5 miles a day during a meet as he moves all over the infield to watch what his team is doing and give advice to his runners.
"He's given us so much," first-team All-Metro selection Maggie Seybold said. "We just wanted to give something back. He's like family to us."
Sanborn was always very supportive of his athletes and would do whatever he could to help them. That's what good coaches do, and it's why McDonogh has a large hole to fill with his absence.
