Based on numbers alone, the Manchester Valley girls indoor track and field team shouldn't have even been in the conversation for an overall championship at the Class 1A state meet.
The Mavericks were a distant second to Smithsburg at the 1A West region meet and, on paper, didn't look capable of reversing that finish at the state meet.
Coach Eric Baumgardner didn't care much for those projections.
Ten of the team's 11 athletes who made the trip to the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover scored points for the Mavericks, who won the 1A crown by 10 points over Smithsburg.
"The fact that we were not chosen to win, 23-point underdogs coming in, to have everyone come out and do what they did was just amazing," Baumgardner said. "It was just a great season."
The crown was the first for Manchester Valley during an indoor season. Baumgardner's Mavericks won the 1A championship at the outdoor state meet last spring for the first state track title in school history.
