Baltimore-area girls soccer: Breaking down the Top 15

The Hereford girls soccer team left the undefeated ranks last week after falling to Baltimore County rival Perry Hall, dropping the Bulls from No. 3 to No. 9 in the Baltimore Sun Top 15 poll. That leaves No. 4 Sparrows Point (7-0) and No. 7 Notre Dame Prep (6-0) as the only teams left with perfect marks, while No. 1 McDonogh (8-0-1), No. 2 Spalding (8-0-1), No. 5 Wilde Lake (9-0-1) and No. 6 South River (8-0-2) all past the midway point of the season without a loss.

Perry Hall’s win jumps the Gators five spots to No. 8 this week. Aside from the loss by Hereford, the other top seven teams combined to go 10-0. Reservoir dropped from No. 9 to No. 11 after falling to Centennial, which is now No. 15 with a 5-2-2 mark.

Looking ahead, the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference is shaping up to be a three-team race with defending champion McDonogh 5-0 in league play and Spalding and Notre Dame Prep both 4-0. The top-ranked Eagles appear to be setting a high bar, evidenced by Friday’s 6-1 win over No. 13 Mercy in a rematch of last year’s title game.

Something will give when NDP visits Spalding on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, No. 3 River Hill (7-1) hosts Wilde Lake in a Howard County showdown that can further shake up next week’s poll.
