Baltimore-area girls soccer: Breaking down the Top 15

The depth of quality teams is deep this season and more proof came in this week’s poll.

Consider: No. 7 South River (6-0-2) and No. 8 Notre Dame Prep (6-0) continued their winning ways but couldn’t move up in the poll with teams in front of them also holding their own. The top eight teams combined to go 17-0-1 last week to keep things intact.

Only No. 6 Wilde Lake (7-0-1) had a blip with a tie against Reservoir in Howard County in a well-played game that puts the Gators (6-0-2) entering the poll at No. 9.

St. Paul’s (5-1-1) took the biggest hit this week, falling from No. 9 to No. 14 because of a 5-2 loss to No. 2 Archbishop Spalding. Bel Air (7-3) got back into the poll at No. 15 after two wins, with Chesapeake (6-2) dropping out after two league losses in Anne Arundel.

Here’s a look at some pivotal games this week:

No. 12 Broadneck at No. 10 Severna Park, Thursday, 4 p.m.

No. 13 Perry Hall at No. 3 Hereford, Friday, 6:30 p.m.

No. 1 McDonogh vs. No. 11 Mercy at Poly, Friday, 7 p.m.
