All-Metro Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year: Francesca Whitehurst, Roland Park

(Algerina Perna / Baltimore Sun)

Roland Park's girls lacrosse players always knew that if they won the draw, they could score a goal in seven seconds — until Francesca Whitehurst proved that wasn't true.

She could score a goal in six seconds.

In overtime against No. 4 John Carroll, Whitehurst won the draw to herself, raced to goal and hit the net in just six seconds to tie the game at 13. The No. 3 Reds went on to win, 14-13.

With her speed, quickness and the velocity of her shot, Whitehurst was one of the toughest players to stop going to goal and she connected on 74 percent of her shots. She finished with 71 goals and seven assists as the Reds (12-6) reached the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference title game.

"She is the one player I found to be unstoppable," Maryvale coach Jessica Randisi said. "She's faster than everyone in the league and she made a significant difference with her presence."

Whitehurst used her speed and innate field sense to play strong defense and anticipate play all over the field. She controlled 72 draws.

Whitehurst completed her career with 198 goals and 20 assists. An Under Armour All-American headed for Georgetown, she will play for the U.S. national Under-19 team going for its fifth straight world championship in Scotland in July.
