Girls cross country runners to watch

Betz ran well as a freshman last fall, placing second in the Class 1A state title meet after winning both the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference and Class 1A North Region championships. The question is how much she'll improve.

Annapolis, sophomore

Coffin is caught in the shadow of her older sister, Maria, at times, but the sophomore is going to be one of the metro area's top runners this year after a strong freshman season in which she took 23rd in the Class 4A state meet.

Coffin is one of the state's top runners in any class. She won the Class 4A state title last year in 18 minutes, 25.3 seconds on the tough Hereford course, beating the old mark by nine-tenths of a second.

Sydney Conboy

Towson, junior

Conboy ran well throughout the season, especially in the bigger meets. Conboy took second in the Baltimore County meet, sixth in the Class 3A North Region and 12th in the state.

Emily Craig

Maryvale, senior

Craig helped lead the Lions to the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland title last fall and could be even better this season. She won the championship meet in 18:55.6, beating Amy Egan of Bryn Mawr by 41.1 seconds as Maryvale took the title.

Bryn Mawr, senior

Egan is coming off of a strong junior season that featured a second-place finish at the IAAM championship meet. In addition, Egan won the Crossfire Invite and took second behind Craig at the Spiked Shoe Invitational.

Natalia Jacobo

Broadneck, senior

Jacobo helped Broadneck finish fourth in the state at the Class 4A championship meet last fall. She took ninth overall — the top Bruin runner — in the race won by county rival Maria Coffin.

Maeve Lyons

Liberty, junior

Lyons is one of the improving young runners in the metro area. She finished sixth in the state in the Class 2A meet as Liberty took fourth overall. Lyons was second in the Carroll County title meet.

Kelly Shearer

Hereford, junior

Shearer finished fourth in the state as Hereford rolled over the field to win the Class 2A crown. She also took second in Baltimore County as the Bulls scored a big victory in that race.

Jasmine Tiamfook

River Hill, junior

Tiamfook is coming off of a very consistent junior season. She finished seventh in the Class 3A state meet as River Hill placed third and took second in the region and sixth in the Howard County title meet.
