Girls Athlete of the Week: Shannon Flanagan, South River, field hockey

The senior goalie shined in the No. 3 Seahawks' 2-1 double overtime win over No. 4 Severna Park last Wednesday, registering 11 saves to help hand the Falcons their first loss of the season. Flanagan, a captain and two-year varsity starter, has yielded just five goals in 10 games to lead the Seahawks to a 9-1 record. With 67 saves, she has turned away 93 percent of the shots that have come her way. South River coach Katie Corcoran said Flanagan's biggest strengths in goal are her quickness, smart decisions and leadership in effectively directing her defense. Flanagan has a 4.018 GPA and is considering playing field hockey in college.

Others considered: Eliza Harris, Friends, soccer; Chelsea Owensby, Mount de Sales, volleyball.
