Girls Athlete of the Week: Casey Martinez, McDonogh, soccer

The sophomore forward helped the No. 1 Eagles get off to an impressive start at the Anne Arundel Community College Labor Day Tournament this past weekend.

In Friday's 5-1 season-opening win against then-No. 8 South River, Martinez set a positive tone with two first-half goals. On Monday, in a 3-0 win over then-No. 6 Severna Park, she scored the game-winner midway through the first half when, finding the left corner with a shot from 15 yards. Big goals on the AACC field is nothing new to Martinez, who scored the overtime winner in last year's Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship game — a 2-1 McDonogh victory over Archbishop Spalding. Last year, Martinez finished with 12 goals and 10 assists to help the Eagles to a 15-1-2 mark.

Others considered: Taylor Cummings, McDonogh, soccer; Rebecca Rinaca, North Harford, field hockey; Abbey Ritter, Severn, soccer; Kat Varga, River Hill, field hockey.
