Girls Athlete of the Week: Bri Jones, Aberdeen, basketball

The 6-foot-3 junior center earned Most Valuable Player honors in leading the No. 1 Eagles (8-0) to the championship of the 39th annual International Association of Approved Basketball Officials Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament last week. With Jones' 30-point, 13-rebound performance in the title game, an 82-44 win over previously-undefeated Wise, the Eagles became the first Baltimore team in 13 years to win the prestigious tournament at Prince George's Community College. Jones also had 18 points and 10 rebounds in a 58-24 win over Eleanor Roosevelt and 21 points and 12 rebounds in a 50-30 win over South Lakes (Va.). For the season, Jones averages 24.5 points, 12.8 rebounds and 3.8 blocks. Jones, who is drawing a lot of college attention with her game and her 3.8 GPA, plays Amateur Athletic Union basketball for the Fairfax Stars.

Others considered: Maya Gibson, Western, basketball; Jasmine Hill, Oakland Mills, basketball; Emily Soller, John Carroll, basketball; Ashleigh Stallings, Maryvale, indoor track; Tiersa Winder, McDonogh, basketball.
