Elizabeth George
McDonogh
George was the heart and soul of a team that went 13-0-2 and captured its first Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference title.
She finished with 18 goals and 14 assists, including two game-winners. The most notable came in overtime of a key late-season game against conference-rival Garrison Forest, when she ran down a free hit near midfield, then beat the Grizzlies defense downfield to score on a fast break.
Coach Halyna Fried said George, a four-year starter who captained the Eagles in her junior and seniors seasons, "raises the level of play of everyone on the field," and called her "hands down … the most skilled field hockey player to ever come through McDonogh."
That was evident when a ball hit her hand on a free hit in the Eagles' conference semifinal against Archbishop Spalding. Fighting through the pain of a shattered finger, she still was able to have a significant effect on the field, then came back three days later to help McDonogh to a championship-game win over Garrison Forest.
George also is a lacrosse standout and was an All-Metro second-team selection as a midfielder each of the past two years. She will continue her lacrosse career at Princeton.
