Old Mill's Chesson leads Washington past Baltimore in Crab Bowl

Old Mill's Rob Chesson puts on a show almost every time he puts on a uniform.

This season, he rushed for 2,702 yards, scored a state-record 49 touchdowns and led the Patriots to the Class 4A state championship.

But Chesson wanted to show that he could do it against the best players in the state, and Saturday's 4th Annual Maryland Crab Bowl at Bowie State provided him the opportunity.

All he did was rush for 137 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries to lead the Washington team to a 14-6 victory over Baltimore.

"I just wanted to prove I can play with the upper talent — the Calvert Halls and the Good Counsels," Chesson said. "My goal was to showcase my talent, and I did. I came here focused and ready to play ball."

While Chesson proved himself as the game's best player, Calvert Hall quarterback Thomas Stuart also had some great moments.

Stuart, one of three quarterbacks to play for Baltimore, engineered an eight-play, 57-yard drive capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass to Cardinals teammate Trevor Williams to with 7:30 remaining. That made it 14-6, but C. Milton Wright's Brendan Magistro's extra point was blocked.

Prior to the touchdown, Thomas kept the drive alive by teaming up with Mount St. Joseph receiver Samuel Benjamin for a 42-yard pass on a third-and-39.

"Getting that score gave us the feeling that we could get down there and get another score," said Baltimore coach Brian Abbott, of Loyola.

That's almost what happened, as Stuart led his team on an 82-yard drive. But Baltimore was stopped at the Washington 15 when DeMatha's Michael Moore stripped-sacked Stuart and recovered the fumble.

"I am proud of our defense," Chesson said. "They stepped up, and that's what won us the game."

Washington — which has won three of the four Crab Bowls — built a 14-0 early in the second quarter when Potomac defensive back Tavon Young recovered a fumble and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown.

Chesson had put his team ahead earlier by rushing for 74 yards on an 81-yard drive. As many of Old Mill's possessions did this fall, it ended with Chesson in the end zone following a 15-yard rush.

"He owns the state record for touchdowns," Abbott said. "He is a heck of a ballplayer. There's no doubt about that. I'd like to have him on my team."
