Dickey, defense rally Catonsville girls from 17 points down in 4A state basketball semifinal victory

Catonsville’s girls basketball team will play for its second straight Class 4A state champion Saturday, but the Comets had to dig out of a 17-point deficit in the semifinal to get there.

Jasmine Dickey scored 24 of her 30 points in the second half to lead the No. 4 Comets to a 63-51 victory over Bethesda-Chevy Chase in Thursday’s state semifinal at Towson University’s SECU Arena.

The Comets (23-3) will meet Eleanor Roosevelt for the title Saturday at 3 p.m. at SECU Arena. The Raiders (23-3) defeated North Point, 54-41, in Thursday’s other semifinal.

In the first half, the Comets struggled with their shooting and BCC (21-5) dominated the boards as the Barons ran up a 25-8 lead with 5:21 left in the second quarter. They led 27-13 at the half.

The Comets turned the game around in the third quarter with a 17-1 run that ended on Dickey’s short jumper and Catonsville’s first lead of the game, 32-30, with 2:55 left in the quarter.

Dickey, who hit just three of 17 shots in the first quarter, scored nine points in the run. The Barons were within 38-36 to open the fourth quarter and, after a couple of free throws from Jameila Barrett (15 points), Dickey scored the next nine Comets points as they boosted their lead to 47-40 with 6:12 to go.

The Barons turned the ball over 28 times, and while the Comets did not take advantage early, they did in second half, converting eight turnovers into points. The Comets finished with 12 steals, three each by Dickey and point guard Gabby Douglas.

Dickey also had 17 rebounds, although the Barons held the team edge on the boards, 46-36.

Dickey, a 5-foot-10 senior forward-guard headed to Delaware, has scored 113 point in four playoff games. She scored her 2,000th career point in the sectional final win and now has 2,068.
