All-Metro Boys Track and Field Coach of the Year: Luke Spurrier, Mount Saint Joseph

This spring's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association track season truly belonged to Luke Spurrier's Mount Saint Joseph team, a group that pulled together for the common goal of winning a championship.

Top-ranked Mount St. Joe had some motivation from a strange event that took place in the winter which cost the Gaels a shot at the indoor title. School officials would not let them go to the indoor championship meet due to poor weather, and they missed out on a shot at a team title after taking the regular-season title.

Spurrier helped guide the Gaels to an even better spring season. They were a balanced team that got points from all over the place, a big reason they went 6-0 in the regular-season MIAA A Conference meets and then rolled to the title in the championship meet.

Mount St. Joseph finished with 157 points in the title meet, beating out Gilman (134). The Gaels won six events, taking the 400 and 800 relays plus wins from Manny Patterson in the 100 and 200 along with the victories from Quinton Coe in the high jump and Christian Carter in the shot put.

Spurrier said he was proud of the way his team's developed over the past few years.

"I started [here] the same time the senior class came in as freshmen," Spurrier said. "It was rewarding to see them develop as student-athletes over the four years and see them finish their high school with a championship. They all put in the hard work to make it a very exciting and memorable year."
