Patterson Mill boys lacrosse team headed to first state title game

After reaching the state semifinals for the first time last season, the Patterson Mill boys lacrosse team has done at least one better this season.

With junior attackman Chase Wedekind scoring consecutive goals 18 seconds apart early in the fourth quarter against Loch Raven, the Huskies were able to find the needed cushion to pull out a 10-4 win over the Raiders in Saturday's Class 2A-1A state semifinal at Bel Air.

Wedekind and sophomore Josh Wilson each finished with three goals and an assist, while sophomore Brendan Egan contributed two goals and five assists as the Huskies advanced to their first state title game.

Patterson Mill (12-6) will take on No. 7 Glenelg in the state final set for Tuesday or Wednesday at UMBC. The Gladiators defeated defending champ Queen Anne's, 15-4, in Friday's other semifinal in a rematch of last year's title game.

Tight through three quarters with Patterson Mill protecting a 6-4 lead, Wedekind changed that with the two quick goals to send the Huskies on their way to the final.

"Fourth quarter, we just came out with everything we had. Our whole offense settled down … and when we got our opportunities we went for it," Wedekind said. "Last year, I think we went into [semifinal game] thinking we were going to lose and this year we came out with fire, wanting to win and make it to the end."

Loch Raven, which got 15 saves from goalie Brandon Glorioso, finished the season with a 10-6 mark.

Linganore 13, Dulaney 6: A quick start for Dulaney on Saturday wasn't enough to finish off Linganore, as the Lancers rallied from an early four-goal deficit to score 12 of the last 13 goals in the Class 4A-3A semifinal at Arundel.

Attackman Michael Kenski and Tyler Thompson scored six goals each for Linganore, which fell behind 5-1 in the first 15:44. Down, 6-2, however, the Frederick County team opened the second half with four straight goals by Thompson to take the lead.

Dulaney (13-6), meanwhile, went scoreless for the final 26:36 against Linganore's packed-in zone.

The Lancers (15-1) advance to the Class 4A-3A finals, where they will face South River, a 14-13 winner over Wootton in the other semifinal. The game will take place either Tuesday or Wednesday at UMBC, with the time to be determined.

It will mark the first appearance in the finals for Linganore, which has won 14 straight since losing to South Carroll in March.

The Lancers also rallied from an 8-3 deficit to edge Westminster in the regional semifinals.
