Baltimore-area boys soccer: Breaking down the Top 15

For a second straight week, The Baltimore Sun’s Top 15 boys soccer poll has a new No. 1 with Loyola Blakefield claiming the top spot.

It was well-earned. The Dons were down two goals in the first half at No. 3 McDonogh on Oct. 9 and rallied for a 3-2 overtime win, with John Peterson scoring in the final minute of regulation to tie the game and then scoring his third goal in overtime for the win.

With previously-No. 1 River Hill (now No. 2 at 9-0-1) tying Wilde Lake the same day, it left Loyola as the area’s only perfect team at 11-0 going into this week. The Dons beat No. 12 Mount Saint Joseph, 6-3, on Monday night to stay unbeaten.

The rest of the poll — Nos. 3 through 15 — remained the same from the week before with No. 8 Gilman impressive in holding its spot. The Greyhounds beat No. 14 Calvert Hall and No. 12 Mount Saint Joseph to strengthen their hold on third place in the MIAA A Conference, only behind No. 1 Loyola and No. 3 McDonogh.

Here’s a look at some pivotal games this week:

» No. 12 Mount St. Joseph at No. 14 Calvert Hall, Wednesday, 4 p.m.

» No. 13 Curley at No. 3 McDonogh, Thursday, 4 p.m.

» No. 10 Mount Hebron at No. 7 Wilde Lake, Thursday, 5:30 p.m.
