KEYS TO VICTORY
Last season, the Cardinals opened their Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference schedule with a 12-7 win at Gilman and went on to go undefeated in league play in winning the league crown. With a strong nucleus returning led by All-Metro Player of the Year Jacob Kelly, they are once again the team to beat in a deep MIAA A field. The Greyhounds are one of the teams looking to present a formidable challenge this season and they have more depth than recent years. Their top priority will be containing the Cardinals’ dangerous attack with Martin and Hank Bethel the key parts on defense in front of Klein. Midfield is the Greyhounds’ biggest strength with Bond, DeMuth and junior Logan Paff looking to keep the ball away from the Cardinals. Injuries have hit the defending champions in the early season, but they still managed a 6-1 record in their tough out-of-confrence schedule. The Cardinals will get back Walsh from injury to help anchor the team’s defense. The play in the middle of the field — winning faceoffs and ground balls to get started in transition will be an important starting point. Both teams have had success on faceoffs with Liam Muhly handling draws for the Greyhounds and Ham McPartland and Chris Cottone sharing the duty for the Cardinals.
