Senior midfielder Alex Woodall was the most dominating player in the area's toughest league and the catalyst for No. 1 St. Mary's, which captured its first Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference crown since 1996.
Woodall, a four-year varsity starter, brought much more than his uncanny ability to dominate the faceoff X, where he won 270 of 373 draws this season. In addition to continually giving the Saints the ball, the captain gave his team leadership and confidence. St. Mary's knew it would go as far as Woodall would take the team, and that was to the very end. He was overpowering and quick, and had polished his craft to allow him to overwhelm at the X. Some of his finest work was done in the biggest games this season.
In the Saints' 13-8 win over then-No. 1 McDonogh in the MIAA A Conference title game, he won 19 of 25 draws — including seven of eight in the pivotal second quarter — and grabbed 13 ground balls to be named the game's Most Valuable Player.
An All-Metro second-team selection last year, the High Point-bound Woodall, known as "The Big Cat," also finished with five goals and nine assists this season.
